I interviewed a Cybersecurity System Administrator at Prosper Independent School District for my informational interview. I initially added him on LinkedIn without a note, and he accepted my request to connect. I began the conversation by trying to connect with him on a personal level by talking about our shared interests. He agreed to the interview really quick and we figured out a time that worked for us both. Below are the messages we exchanged.

As for the interview itself, it went pretty well. I felt confident about hosting the interview and he was patient. I wrote down some questions I wanted to ask, but I chose to ask different questions because of the way the conversation was flowing. For example, he was telling me about his college experiences, and I asked him to tell me what steps I should take in college to set me up for success. Also, there were a lot of valuable information I did not include in our team presentation such as his suggestion that I start a Home Lab in order to gain hands on experience with different IT devices.
Overall, I am proud of how I conducted the interview. I asked thoughtful questions, actively listened, and stayed engaged. One thing I can improve next time I do an interview is to let the interviewee know the nature of the interview beforehand. Things such as what type of questions I will be asking and how long the interview will take can help the interviewee mentally prepare and provide more thoughtful and relevant answers throughout the interview.Â
